The Washington Nationals have promoted Bruce the Bat Dog from Triple-A Rochester, marking the young golden retriever’s big league debut on Saturday. The team is hopeful that Bruce will prove to be a standout performer at Nationals Park.
Bruce earned the call-up after a flawless performance this season, boasting a perfect 1.000 retrieving average in three appearances. At just one year and nine months old, Bruce made his professional debut last September.
Dan Mason, general manager of the Red Wings, expressed pride in Bruce’s promotion, calling it “historic” and well-deserved.
In a lighthearted video, Red Wings manager Matt LeCroy delivered the news to Bruce. Sitting at his desk, LeCroy called the dog into his office, telling him, “I have some news for you, I think you’re gonna like it.” The camera revealed Bruce patiently sitting across from him, ready for the big announcement.
Mason praised Bruce’s ability to bring joy, stating, “Nobody makes people smile more than Bruce. He’s proven he’s ready for the big leagues and has earned his status as a phenom. He’ll put on a doggone great show for Nats fans on June 14.”
Bruce’s debut will coincide with the team’s Pups in the Park event, which includes a press conference, pregame recognition, and honorary bat retrieval. Fans can also visit the WTAR Puppy Lounge at section 143, where Wolf Trap Animal Rescue will have adoptable dogs.
