Dogs Rescued from Ogden Hoarder House Now Ready for Adoption

by Doreen Miller

Several dogs rescued from a hoarding situation in Ogden are now available for adoption, with shelters across northern Utah offering the animals a chance at a new life. Over 150 dogs were removed from the home, and 45 of them were taken in by the Humane Society.

Guinn Shuster, director of marketing and communications for the Humane Society, shared that the dogs’ adaptability was a pleasant surprise. “We expected them to be fearful of being handled, but they’ve done well,” Shuster said. She confirmed that none of the dogs required euthanasia due to medical or behavioral issues, though one unfortunately did not survive.

Ogden Police are continuing their investigation into the hoarding case, but have not yet announced whether any charges will be filed.

Shuster emphasized that most of the dogs are now ready for adoption. Each one will be spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. However, due to their past experiences, the dogs may need time and patience to adjust to their new homes. “They haven’t been outside much, so they are more comfortable indoors,” Shuster noted. While many are recovering from skin issues like flea infestations, they remain shy and timid around people. Fortunately, most are young and should adapt well with the proper care.

Mark Berger, an Ogden business owner, felt compelled to help after seeing the scale of the rescue. “It could have been a lot worse,” Berger remarked. To support the cause, he’s organizing the “Canines, Coffee & Cars” event this Sunday at his Scooter’s Coffee location.
