Owner Arrested After Dog Dies in Crate During Extreme Heat

LAS VEGAS (KVVU) — A 30-year-old Las Vegas woman was arrested over the weekend after her dog died in a crate outside in extreme heat.

The incident, which occurred last Saturday, was caught on video. The footage reportedly shows the dog panting before it collapsed in an outdoor crate during triple-digit temperatures.

Las Vegas police said Clark County Animal Protective Services alerted dispatch around 2 p.m. to a home in east Las Vegas. Authorities stated the dog appeared to have been left locked in the crate for hours by its owner, Olivia Underwood.

Neighbor Marisela Bautista, who tried to help, described the dog’s body as “very hot” when she approached it after it collapsed. “I immediately poured cold water on her to see if I could get a reaction, but nothing happened,” Bautista said.

The person who filmed the video has asked to remain anonymous. They explained they have been criticized online for their response to the situation. “I’ve received rude comments saying I didn’t do enough, or that I should be charged like the owner,” the neighbor said.

The neighbor added she called animal protection services but did not enter the backyard or knock on Underwood’s door. “I didn’t know the legal way to handle it. I didn’t want to get in trouble or put myself at risk. I have a family, and I don’t know what those people might do,” she explained.

A spokesperson for Clark County urged anyone who sees an animal in distress to contact animal protection services or the police immediately. “Do not attempt to remove the animal yourself,” the spokesperson advised. “Wait for authorities to arrive.”

Underwood has posted bond and is scheduled for a court appearance.
