Thousands of people in England took steps to avoid type 2 diabetes last year, according to new data from NHS England. A record 166,360 adults enrolled in the Healthier You programme, a national initiative designed to help those at risk of developing the condition.
The nine-month scheme offers personalised advice on healthy eating and physical activity. By completing the programme, participants can cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 37%, researchers at Manchester University found.
Since its launch in 2016, the initiative has helped more than 900,000 people across England who are at high risk of the disease.
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin or use it effectively. This leads to high blood sugar levels, which can cause serious health problems if not treated.
