As World Rescue Dog Day approaches on 20 May, global animal welfare group FOUR PAWS South Africa urges people to adopt rescue dogs from shelters instead of buying from breeders or pet shops.
South Africa faces a serious pet overpopulation crisis, with an estimated 4.05 million dogs and cats living without permanent homes. This includes 1.7 million stray dogs, 1.7 million stray cats, and over 650,000 animals in shelters. The crisis is worsened by poverty, limited veterinary services, and low awareness of responsible pet ownership.
FOUR PAWS reminds the public that rescue dogs are just as loving, loyal, and healthy as dogs from breeders. Many are surrendered due to abandonment, abuse, or their owners’ financial struggles—not because of behavioral problems.
The organization encourages potential pet owners to visit local shelters, meet the animals, and learn about the adoption process. Adopting a rescue dog not only gives an animal a second chance but also helps combat overbreeding and the unethical pet trade.
