The Derry Police Department recently celebrated the successful completion of training by Bear, its first comfort dog, officially recognizing him as a full-time member of the department. The 1-year-old black Labrador is now set to provide emotional support to both officers and the community.
Bear’s training was completed in collaboration with Hero Pups, a New Hampshire-based nonprofit that specializes in providing comfort dogs for law enforcement agencies. Over the course of a year, Bear underwent extensive training to prepare for his unique role, which will involve offering stress relief and companionship to first responders dealing with the emotional demands of their work.
Bear’s handler, Officer Erin Sullivan, was also acknowledged for her dedication throughout the training process. Sullivan, who has formed a close bond with Bear, expressed how much the dog has become an integral part of her family as well as her work.
Chief George Feole praised the comfort dog program as a significant success, noting the mental and emotional toll that law enforcement can have on officers. “Bear offers a unique form of stress relief, providing a much-needed source of comfort and companionship within the department,” Feole remarked during the ceremony.
The department has also launched a Critical Incident Stress Management team and an internal wellness team, with Bear playing a central role. In addition to his work supporting officers, Bear will be visiting schools, libraries, and various community events to build relationships and promote trust.
Officer Sullivan expressed her pride in Bear’s accomplishments, stating that he is always eager to get to work, donning his official harness before jumping into the car to head to the department. With his official certification, Bear is now fully equipped to assist in fostering both officer wellness and community connections.
