Heroic Rescue: Good Samaritans Save Dog from Drowning in Yuba River

by Doreen Miller

A dramatic and heartwarming rescue unfolded on the afternoon of May 7 near the South Yuba Fork Bridge, when a couple hiking in the area risked their safety to save a dog stranded in the rushing Yuba River.

Tiffany and Jason Ramos were hiking when they heard what Tiffany described as “a dog crying for help.” Upon investigation, they discovered a dog clinging to a rock amidst dangerous currents. The dog, later identified as Zen, had apparently been swept downriver and was trapped, visibly frightened and in danger of being carried away.

With no time to spare, the Ramoses sprang into action. “They had ropes in their truck and decided they had to do what they could to save the dog,” said Stefanie Geckler, Supervising Animal Control Officer for the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office. They successfully pulled Zen from the rock, but the steep terrain left them temporarily stranded.

Just then, fate intervened. A couple passing on a motorcycle stopped to help—and the man, as luck would have it, was an expert climbing instructor. He quickly guided the Ramoses and Zen back to safety before leaving the scene quietly, never giving his name.

“I didn’t get to speak to him,” said Geckler, “but we’re incredibly grateful for his help, as well as the Ramoses’ bravery and the concerned callers who alerted emergency services.”

Zen’s owner, who had been hiking upstream with two dogs, was searching for her when they were joyfully reunited at the scene.

While celebrating the rescue, authorities issued a caution. “We never recommend risking personal safety,” Geckler added, “but the compassion shown here was extraordinary. That said, the Yuba River is extremely dangerous this time of year. Always call 911 in emergencies and follow dispatcher instructions.”

This inspiring rescue serves as both a reminder of the risks posed by swift rivers and a testament to the courage and kindness of everyday people.
