In a groundbreaking initiative at Institut Lacetània in Manresa, two therapy dogs, Mel and Fusta, are helping students improve their emotional and social well-being. The high school, located in central Catalonia, serves 1,800 students, many of whom have special educational needs. As a result, the school offers an Intensive Support for Inclusive Schooling (SIEI) unit to assist these students, and therapy dogs have become an integral part of the school’s inclusive approach.
According to Èric Sanmartí, the SIEI coordinator, the therapy dogs have proven to be invaluable tools in fostering positive social interactions. “The students are already accustomed to the dogs being in the classroom. They have become just another member of the group,” Sanmartí explains.
Collaboration with Els Tres Pins Canine School
The dog therapy program, initially aimed at enhancing the emotional well-being of students with special needs, has extended its benefits to the broader student body. This collaborative effort involves Els Tres Pins, a canine school responsible for training the therapy dogs. Therapists Enric Bruch and Marta Vallverdú from the school emphasize that the interaction with dogs goes beyond mere play. It creates meaningful bonds that promote emotional growth and personal development.
“You can work on anything with dogs,” says Bruch. “Self-confidence, self-esteem, patience, and even the ability to offer constructive feedback—everything works better when dogs are involved.”
Therapeutic Benefits for All
Dog therapy at Lacetània is not only aimed at improving social and emotional skills but also helps reduce anxiety and enhances mood. The physical interaction with the animals provides a calming effect, promoting a sense of comfort and well-being. Additionally, the therapy has shown benefits in improving students’ mobility, balance, and coordination.
Vallverdú notes that the therapeutic approach is beneficial to all students, not just those with special needs. “Dog therapy is good for everyone,” she asserts.
Students like Pau and Montserrat have expressed their satisfaction with the initiative, sharing how it has positively impacted their school experience.
Supporting Special Needs Students Through Multiple Initiatives
This dog therapy project is just one of several initiatives designed to support students with special needs at Institut Lacetània. Another program includes a cooking class that helps strengthen students’ sense of responsibility, teamwork, patience, and creativity, while promoting healthy habits.
The combined efforts of these initiatives are helping to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all students at the school.
