For the first time ever, Guide Dogs WA is offering the public a unique opportunity to name one of their newest recruits—a clever and adorable Labrador puppy in training to become a Guide Dog or Assistance Dog.
This yet-to-be-named puppy has already begun its journey to assist individuals with low or no vision, or disabilities, and will eventually become a beloved companion to a West Australian in need. The naming competition is part of Guide Dogs WA’s fundraising efforts in honor of International Guide Dog Day, which falls on April 30. The day celebrates the invaluable service of 30,000 guide dogs worldwide, who play a crucial role in transforming the lives of their owners and helping them lead more independent lives.
Normally an honor reserved for major sponsors or a Guide Dog’s handler, the chance to name this special pup is now available to anyone who donates $25 or more on April 30. Every donation enters you into the running for this rare opportunity.
Guide Dogs WA CEO, Anna Presser, shared, “This year, we felt giving members of the community a chance to name one of our precious pups was a wonderful way to recognize the many West Australians who support our International Guide Dog Day fundraising efforts.”
Presser also emphasized the vital role the community plays in ensuring that Guide Dogs have access to all areas they need to navigate freely. Research from Guide Dogs Australia revealed that many Australians with low vision or blindness still face significant challenges, including service refusals—such as 46% experiencing refusal from taxis or rideshare services.
In addition to naming the puppy, donors will have the chance to track the pup’s progress throughout its two years of training with regular “pupdates.” They will also be invited to exclusive meet-and-greet events, offering a rare chance to get up close and personal with this future service dog.
