A young girl has been left with a permanent scar and enduring psychological trauma following a dog attack at a football training session in Auckland’s Titirangi suburb. The incident, which occurred at Tahurangi/Crum Park, involved an uncontrolled off-leash dog and has reignited concerns about rising dog attacks on public sports grounds.
Details of the Incident
According to Auckland Council, the girl was with family, watching a football training session when the off-leash dog attacked. The child sustained significant physical injuries and emotional distress. The council emphasized that this is not an isolated case and that similar attacks are increasing across Auckland sports fields.
Robert Irvine, Auckland Council’s general manager for licensing and compliance, highlighted the growing danger of off-leash dogs in public sports areas. “Week after week, dogs are walked off-leash across Auckland’s sports fields while children train, play, and compete. An attack can and does happen so quickly,” he said.
Health and Safety Concerns
Beyond the immediate safety risks, the council also raised concerns about dog fouling on sports grounds, which not only presents a health hazard but also affects the quality of the playing surfaces.
Councillor Josephine Bartley, chair of the regulatory and safety committee, called the incident an example of “thoughtless behaviour” with serious consequences. A dog owner herself, Bartley strongly condemned the presence of uncontrolled dogs on sports fields. “No parent wants to see their child land face-first in dog excrement while playing soccer or rugby,” she said.
Council Rules and Enforcement
Under Auckland Council’s regional rules, dogs are not permitted on most marked sports playing surfaces at any time. While dogs may be allowed on-leash on sidelines, the council has designated specific areas for off-leash dog exercise away from sports grounds.
The council is now reinforcing these regulations and encouraging dog owners to act responsibly. It is also considering increased monitoring and enforcement to protect children and the public.
Community Impact
The traumatic incident has prompted calls for greater awareness and stricter compliance with leash laws. The victim’s family and local community are calling for more action to ensure that parks and playing fields remain safe spaces for children and families.
