Therapy Dog Supports Athletes at Special Olympics Summer Games

by Doreen Miller

Northeast Regional Medical Center’s therapy dog, Luna, recently provided emotional support to athletes during the Special Olympics Missouri State Summer Games in Kirksville. The hospital’s Therapy Dog Program, established in 2024, aims to reduce depression, anxiety, and stress for patients. Luna’s presence at the event encouraged social interaction and comforted the athletes.

Maci Arnold, Health and Wellness Manager for Special Olympics Missouri, noted the significant role of therapy dogs in providing emotional support during competitions. “We’ve seen athletes leave their interactions with therapy dogs smiling and more confident, ready to compete,” Arnold said.

Cassie Geisendorfer, NRMC employee and Luna’s handler, shared that many athletes enjoyed bonding with Luna, from petting her to offering high fives. “It’s rewarding to see Luna bring joy and comfort to others,” Geisendorfer said, emphasizing her gratitude for being able to offer this service to both patients and athletes.

Luna, certified by Therapy Dogs International, follows strict guidelines for hospital and patient visits. Unlike service dogs, which are trained for specific tasks to assist individuals with disabilities, therapy dogs like Luna are trained to offer support and comfort to a broad range of people in settings such as schools and hospitals.

The Therapy Dog Program at NRMC has seen positive results, benefiting both patients and staff. Geisendorfer expressed hope for expanding the program in the future.
