Weston’s long-anticipated dog park is preparing to open its gates to the public on Monday, May 5, following a soft launch event held earlier today.
First Selectwoman Samantha Nestor officially inaugurated the park by cutting a ceremonial ribbon at the entrance. She was joined by key community members who first championed the project in 2017, along with major donors, including the family of the late Selectman Brian Gordon.
The new park spans approximately 2.8 acres within a larger 36-acre parcel that the town acquired decades ago for future municipal needs. Access is available via a driveway at 22 Lords Highway East, leading to a parking lot and the fenced-in park grounds.
Today’s event featured a symbolic procession of guests and their dogs, led by Maria Calamito, a founding member of the citizen group that initially proposed the park. In 2018, the group successfully brought the project to a Special Town Meeting, where voters approved the plan with the understanding that volunteers would spearhead fundraising efforts to cover construction costs.
The dog park’s development overcame multiple legal challenges over the years, culminating in a final federal court decision last November that cleared the way for completion.
