Dogs Trust Shoreham has issued an urgent appeal for more foster carers to support the growing number of dogs in need of temporary homes. The UK’s largest dog welfare charity is calling on dog lovers to volunteer, particularly for larger breeds or dogs with specific needs.
As the charity continues to receive numerous inquiries from individuals looking to rehome their pets, the demand for foster carers has intensified. Volunteers play a crucial role in enabling Dogs Trust to care for more dogs by providing a safe and loving temporary environment. The charity covers all costs associated with fostering, including food, bedding, veterinary care, and other necessities.
Michaela Wells, assistant rehoming centre manager at Dogs Trust Shoreham, emphasized the importance of foster carers in the charity’s mission. “Fosterers provide our dogs with the chance to thrive in a home setting and help us care for even more animals,” she said.
The charity’s Home from Home scheme allows foster carers to welcome dogs into their homes for periods ranging from a few days to several months until they find their permanent families. Those interested in fostering must be over 18, have access to an outdoor space, and be able to transport the dogs to and from the centre.
Dogs Trust is currently seeking individuals who live within a one-hour radius of the Shoreham centre and can care for dogs without young children or other pets at home. To learn more about becoming a foster carer, potential volunteers can contact Dogs Trust or visit the rehoming centre directly.
By fostering, volunteers help free up space in Dogs Trust’s rehoming centres, allowing the charity to accommodate more dogs in need of their forever homes.
