A dog walk in Didcot will take place on May 17 to emphasize the positive influence pets, particularly dogs, can have on their owners’ mental health.
This event, organized by pet care platform Rover and Mental Health Mates, is part of a series of mindful dog walks across the UK in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Week, running from May 12 to 18. The walk, open to all, aims to create a supportive environment where participants can enjoy fresh air, companionship, and a reminder that they are not alone.
Supporting the initiative is television presenter Chris Packham, who has shared his personal experience of how dogs have supported him during difficult times. “There have been moments in my life when I was in crisis and wanted to end my life – and it was my poodles who got me through,” Packham explained. “Dogs don’t judge, they just love and listen – and sometimes, that’s exactly what saves you. They offer connection, purpose, and a reason to keep going.”
The walk comes amid new research showing that dogs play a crucial role in the lives of their owners, especially during challenging times. According to the study, 84% of UK dog owners turn to their pets for comfort when facing hardships, and 20% of respondents believe their dog has significantly improved their mental health. Additionally, half of those surveyed said their dogs provide a reason to keep going.
The research also reveals that 97% of dog owners believe their pets can sense when they are feeling down, with 41% feeling their dogs are more attuned to their emotions than most people. For many, walking their dog is often the only reason they leave the house during tough times. The study found that 83% of dog owners feel less isolated when walking with their dogs, and 67% feel more comfortable opening up in the presence of others.
Bryony Gordon, founder of Mental Health Mates, emphasized the importance of outdoor activities and human connection for mental wellbeing. “When you add dogs into the mix, that impact is even greater. Dogs provide us with love and connection. Our partnership with Rover will help more people access these benefits, bringing communities together to support each other in a safe and welcoming space.”
