Recent research from the Royal Veterinary College has identified the dog breeds with the shortest life expectancies in the UK, with flat-faced (brachycephalic) dogs, such as French Bulldogs and Pugs, leading the list.
The study, which assessed over 30,000 dogs from 18 popular breeds and crossbreeds, found that dogs with short snouts face significant health risks, including breathing difficulties, skin infections, and spinal issues, all contributing to their shorter lifespans.
French Bulldogs, in particular, were found to have an average life expectancy of just 4.53 years, while English Bulldogs and Pugs follow closely behind at 7.39 and 7.65 years, respectively. The research, which examined dogs that passed away between January 2016 and July 2020, highlights the importance of considering these health concerns before purchasing a dog of these breeds.
In contrast, Jack Russell Terriers are among the longest-living dogs, with an average life expectancy of 12.72 years, followed by Yorkshire Terriers at 12.5 years and Border Collies at 12.1 years.
Experts are urging potential dog owners to be mindful of the long-term health implications when selecting a breed, particularly for those that are more susceptible to health issues.
