Why Exercising with Your Dog Could Be a Mental Health Gamechanger

by Doreen Miller

It turns out that man’s best friend could be your mind’s best companion too. Recent research by Asics highlights the incredible benefits of exercising with your dog, not just for physical fitness but also for mental health. According to The Mind’s Best Friend Research, a global survey of 28,000 people from 14 countries, including the UK, the US, and Australia, 65% of dog owners say their dog is their primary motivator for getting active, surpassing family members, celebrities, and even personal trainers.

Key Mental Health Benefits

The study found that 79% of dog owners report feeling less stressed, and 83% feel happier after exercising with their dog. This simple act of getting outside with your dog leads to a significant improvement in mental wellbeing. Professor Brendon Stubbs from King’s College London analyzed the participants’ State of Mind scores, a metric for measuring overall mental health. His findings revealed that dog owners had, on average, 18% higher wellbeing scores than those without dogs. Moreover, 81% of dog owners said exercising with their dog directly boosts their mental wellbeing.

Physical Health and Activity Levels

Dog owners are also more likely to meet physical activity guidelines, with the study revealing that they exercise 31% more than non-dog owners. On average, dog owners engage in about 210 minutes of exercise per week, which aligns with health recommendations. This increased physical activity is a vital contributor to better overall mental health, as regular exercise is proven to reduce anxiety, depression, and stress.

Mood Boost

Additionally, 84% of dog owners report a mood boost after a walk or run with their pet. Dogs help to reduce feelings of isolation and provide a strong sense of companionship, especially during times of stress or mental strain. For many dog owners, their pets act as motivators, encouraging them to get out and be active even on days when they might otherwise remain sedentary.

Dogs as ‘Influencers’

In line with these findings, ASICS has even recruited Felix the Samoyed, one of the internet’s favorite dogs, as a brand ambassador to promote the Mind’s Best Friend campaign. Felix, known for his love of walks, runs, and zoomies, will be used to spread awareness about the positive impact of exercising with dogs. The brand is also inviting people to nominate their own dogs to become official ASICS Mind’s Best Friend Ambassadors, complete with branded gear and accessories.

Conclusion

Exercising with your dog is much more than a fitness routine—it’s a mental health gamechanger. From reducing stress and improving mood to motivating owners to stay active, dogs are integral in helping their human companions maintain both physical and mental health. Whether you’re going for a casual walk or a brisk jog, moving with your dog is a powerful and enjoyable way to boost your wellbeing.
