A rescue dog named Mika has been patiently waiting for a new home for more than 500 days at the RSPCA Brent Knoll Animal Centre, near Burnham-On-Sea, with hopes still high that her perfect family is out there.
The five-year-old Akita was rescued alongside three other dogs from an abusive environment where her previous owner had inflicted deliberate injuries. Despite her difficult past, Mika has shown a remarkable capacity for affection.
“She’s a big, powerful girl, but deep down she’s an absolute softie who adores people,” said Katy Darelli, Manager of the RSPCA Brent Knoll Animal Centre. “It’s heartbreaking to see her passed over time and again while other dogs find their forever homes. She really deserves her chance.”
Since her arrival over a year ago, Mika has watched many fellow rescue dogs leave for loving homes. Yet, despite her gentle nature, she continues to be overlooked — largely due to her size and specific needs.
Mika’s ideal home would be one where she is the only pet, with owners who can manage her strength and provide exercise away from other dogs. She would be best suited to a household with older children of secondary school age.
“We’re urging anyone who feels they could be the right fit for Mika to visit us and meet her in person,” added Darelli. “We’re confident that once they do, they’ll fall for her.”
For those interested in giving Mika the home she deserves, further details can be found on her rehoming profile.
In addition, the Brent Knoll Animal Centre will be hosting a Summer Jazz Afternoon on Sunday, 1st June, to raise vital funds for the care of animals like Mika. The event, featuring live music from The Swing Jazz Project Band, will be held in a marquee on the centre’s grounds, with all proceeds supporting the shelter’s rescue work.
